Overview

IRSC Computer Science Department

The Computer Science Department provides instruction to address the needs of students seeking employment in computer-related occupations and to develop the foundational skills necessary for computer literacy for local citizens. We assist students in the following ways.

DEGREES

Two year:
  • Obtain a two-year Associate in Science (A. S.) Degree in Computer Information Technology if you want to both gain technical skills necessary for a career in a computer related field and start
    working quickly.
  • Obtain a two-year Associate in Arts (A. A.) Degree in Computer Programming if you want to initiate a your first two years of study at IRSC with the intention of completing a four year Bachelor’s degree at another institution.

Four year:

  • Students who obtain a two-year A. S. Degree in Computer Information Technology can then go on to obtain a four-year Bachelor in Applied Science (BAS) Degree in Organizational Management from IRSC with only two more years of study.

CERTIFICATES

Academic

  • Students who have completed the required core technical courses (30 credits) and the course “Financial Accounting I” can apply for
a Certificate in Computer Programming to enhance their career success.

Industry

  • Many of our courses are specifically designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to obtain specific industry certificates that are in high demand by employers. After passing these courses, students earn college
credit and can then schedule to take the industry exam in our local testing
center. Our courses prepare students for industry certifications such as:

    • CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) from Cisco
    • Systems Inc.
    • CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) from VCampus Corporation
    • MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional ) from Microsoft
    • MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) from Microsoft
    • MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer)from Microsoft
    • Many of our students also pursue the A+ Certification from CompTIA
This is offered by the Department of Electronics Engineering Technology

SKILL MAINTENANCE:

As people advance in their careers or seek new skills, they need instruction in specific computer related topics, such as new programming languages, applications software, and emerging technologies in cyber
  • security, networking, and web development. We offer a range
of classes that satisfy these needs. Some are part of our degree programs, but can be taken independently. We can also arrange for customized on-site training through the IRSC Corporate and Community Training Institute (CCTI).

SELF-ENRICHMENT:

For those seeking personal knowledge about computer related topics
for their own enrichment, in addition to our regularly scheduled offerings we offer a variety of courses defined to serve the needs of the individual citizens or small businesses. These are offered on an “on-demand” basis. Whenever a sufficient number of people register an interest in any of these courses, the college will contact them and schedule the course. Typically, they are offered as a series of four Friday afternoon sessions, although the preferences of the individuals who indicate interest in the courses will ultimately dictate the schedule of the next offering. All of the classes are offered for college credit. Topics include (but are not limited to): Home PC Setup, Family PC Usage, Using AOL®,  Home PC Maintenance, and Small Office / Home Office Networking. If you are interested in any of these courses, contact our department at 772-462-7620, and you will be contacted when enough students with similar
needs have been recorded.

PHI BETA LAMBDA:

IRSC’s Computer Science Department encourages our students to join
the local chapter of Phi Beta Lambda(PBL). PBL is the collegiate division
of Future Business Leaders of America, the largest student business organization in
the country. The driving goal of PBL is to train future business leaders to be contributing members of society. Members benefit from leadership and training, from contact made through networking, and from opportunities to apply their knowledge through business-related activities.
